| The Free Press | The Americans Left Behind in RussiaPaid postThe Free Press The Trump administration boasts that no more Americans are 'wrongfully detained' in Russia, but at least five are still behind bars, forgotten by almost everyone but their families, writes Frannie Block. When Robin Stultz’s brother Chuck Zimmerman texted her to say his sailboat was being trailed by the Russian Navy in the Black Sea back in June 2025, she thought he was kidding. “Pics or it didn’t happen!” Stultz texted on Tuesday, June 17, at 10:23 a.m. Eastern Time, followed by “lol” and two laughing emojis. Then he sent the picture. It depicted slightly choppy waters, a burnt-orange sunset forming in the background, and at the center, what looked like a small warship. “In a 150 ft ship—with guns,” he said. Zimmerman, 58, would detail to his sister over text how he was forced by the Russian Navy to sail 22 hours from the international waters he was in toward the Russian port of Sochi. There, Russian naval officers hopped aboard the used sailboat he had purchased with his life savings nearly a year before. Zimmerman, Stultz told me, wanted to take a sailing trip around the world—a lifelong dream of his since his years as a Navy engineer aboard the USS Nimitz. | 0.50 |
