The Guardian

The Guardian is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in Manchester in 1821 as The Manchester Guardian and changed its name in 1959, followed by a move to London. Along with its sister paper, The Guardian Weekly, The Guardian is part of the Guardian Media Group, owned by the Scott Trust Limited. The trust was created in 1936 to "secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity and to safeguard the journalistic freedom and liberal values of The Guardian free from commercial or political interference". The trust was converted into a limited company in 2008, with a constitution written so as to maintain for The Guardian the same protections as were built into the structure of the Scott Trust by its creators. Profits are reinvested in its journalism rather than distributed to owners or shareholders. It is considered a newspaper of record in the UK.

  • Person arrested after fire at police department where officer who shot and killed one-year-old Kohen Wiley had worked In the early hours of 31 October, a fire broke out at the Senatobia police department in Mississippi, which has been embroiled in controversy recently after one of its officers shot and killed Kohen Wiley, a one-year-old. Though the cause of the fire has not been reported, it is being investigated as arson by agents with the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. In June, then Senatobia police sergeant Hunter Foster shot Kohen as he sat in his mother’s arms in a Walmart parking lot. Foster, who is white, was responding to a report of an alleged shoplifting; Kohen, his mother and the driver of the vehicle, are Black. Continue reading...

  • People everywhere are searching for the reason behind their sudden bursts of anguish or homesickness Women: was your autoimmune condition misdiagnosed? Some say it feels like a sudden burst of anguish ; others liken it more to homesickness. The sudden onset of a sinking, upsetting feeling due to nipple stimulation is anecdotally known as Sad Nipple Syndrome (SNS) , and for Sandra, it can be triggered by something as commonplace as putting on a shirt. “I was probably a child when I first noticed: ‘Why does touching my nipple make me sad?’” says the 28-year-old. The sensation seemed to happen at random, and without the words to describe it, she kept it a secret. It wasn’t until college that she worked up the courage to Google it. “I realized I wasn’t crazy,” she says. Continue reading...

What caused the Democrat’s radical change of heart between a Saturday night promise to her House colleague Debbie Dingell that she would stand with the Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and a public endorsement on Sunday morning of his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers? • These resource-guzzling centres drive up utility bills and are hated across the political spectrum. Cue a clunky, but potentially influential, new name for them Jesus may have turned water into wine, but Donald Trump has done one better: he turned Lake Ontario into Lake America and the Gulf of Mexico into the Gulf of America. And then, for his next trick, he insisted we all stop talking about artificial intelligence (AI) and call it superintelligence (SI) instead. Those, of course, are only a few of the name changes the president has ushered in. When he’s not golfing or commenting on senators’ buttocks , president Trump loves a rebranding project. Which makes sense: coming up with a new name is far easier than making meaningful improvements to people’s lives. Continue reading...

  • Film and television director who won plaudits for The Ruling Class, The Changeling and The Krays In 2013, when Martin Scorsese compiled a brief list of his favourite horror films, he placed the eerie and overlooked 1980 ghost story The Changeling in the company of classics such as The Shining, The Exorcist and Psycho. Scorsese called it a “haunted house movie filled with sadness and dread”; Guillermo del Toro called it “a masterpiece”. Its director was the versatile British-Hungarian film-maker Peter Medak, who has died aged 88. The Changeling concerns a composer ( George C Scott ) who is grieving the deaths of his wife and daughter in a road accident. After moving into a long-vacant Seattle mansion where things start going bump in the night, he becomes convinced that a spectral presence is trying to communicate with him. Continue reading...

  • The US has seen plenty of terrible speeches over the centuries. But Trump’s midterm rallies are a new low In a sense, history has already been made. We do not know the result of the election yet, but over the last two months, Americans have endured the worst speeches ever given by a president of the United States. It is far from a simple matter to adjudicate – there have been so many bad speeches over the years, going back the founders, some of whom dreaded speaking in public. George Washington’s inaugural address did not begin promisingly, with a halting first sentence: “Among the vicissitudes incident to life, no event could have filled me with greater anxieties than that of which the notification was transmitted by your order, and received on the 14th day of the present month.” Continue reading...
