The Guardian

The Guardian is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in Manchester in 1821 as The Manchester Guardian and changed its name in 1959, followed by a move to London. Along with its sister paper, The Guardian Weekly, The Guardian is part of the Guardian Media Group, owned by the Scott Trust Limited. The trust was created in 1936 to "secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity and to safeguard the journalistic freedom and liberal values of The Guardian free from commercial or political interference". The trust was converted into a limited company in 2008, with a constitution written so as to maintain for The Guardian the same protections as were built into the structure of the Scott Trust by its creators. Profits are reinvested in its journalism rather than distributed to owners or shareholders. It is considered a newspaper of record in the UK.

  • Cauliflower is a flavour sponge, but miraculously stays satisfyingly al dente. Smother it in chermoula, tahini and harissa, or transform it into spicy bhajis served with a lively chutney Cauliflower is a culinary gem. Often overlooked, it possesses a remarkable ability to absorb complex seasonings and textures while maintaining a satisfying bite. It’s also perfect for braising, frying or roasting, and provides a canvas for bold, herbaceous and spicy flavour profiles that elevate an ostensibly simple brassica into a true centrepiece. • The brilliant planet is about to join the waning crescent moon and the brightest star in the Virgo constellation Early risers have a beautiful sight to look forward to this week as brilliant Venus joins the waning crescent moon and the star Spica in the morning sky. The chart shows the view looking east-south-east from London at 0600 GMT on 7 November. Venus will be the easiest object to identify, shining brilliantly. Next to it will be Spica, the brightest star in the constellation of Virgo, the virgin, situated about 250 light years from Earth. Continue reading...

  • The expansive project has hype and money behind it – but how do you avoid it falling into the disappointment trap so many films end up stumbling into? If the history of failed Hollywood fantasy projects over the past 20 years has taught us anything, it is that transporting audiences to another world is only half the battle: you also have to give them a reason to spend several hours there. The Golden Compass diluted Philip Pullman’s theological bite, Warcraft thought that just explaining its world would make us care about it, and The Dark Tower compressed Stephen King’s sprawling mythology so ruthlessly that it scarcely left room for a story. All these films at one point had fans of the original source material quivering with anticipation at the prospect of seeing their beloved worlds on the big screen; all ended up disappointing. Which brings us to the forthcoming Alex Garland adaptation of the hugely popular high fantasy video game, Elden Ring. If there was ever a cinematic test of the phrase “too big to fail”, it is surely this. Elden Ring has sold more than 30m copies and is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games ever made. George RR Martin himself wrote the foundational mythology of warring demigods that underpins its gorgeous fantasy hellscape. And Garland as writer-director seems almost impossibly perfect: as the creative behind Dredd, Ex Machina and Annihilation, he has both the taste for beautiful nightmares and the geek credentials to deliver something extraordinary. • Despite the US president’s ratings being at rock bottom, undoing his legacy will be difficult, not least because the Democrats are in disarray The stats and polling all suggest one thing: the Republicans are set for a hammering in the midterms. Donald Trump has the lowest approval rating of any US president going into a midterm election since Harry Truman. And it’s still dropping. The Democrats are projected to win by a margin of 11 percentage points , the largest swing by any party in almost 20 years. It is possible that the Democrats flip the Senate and secure a large majority in Congress. Those majorities would make a material difference, perhaps finally establishing oversight of the policies Trump has brought in during his second term: immigration enforcement, trade disputes, gutting the federal workforce, the Iran war, to say nothing of his own family’s corruption. The tide seems to be turning, and one question is on everyone’s mind: is the Trump era really ending? “Nobody wants to jinx it,” wrote David Wallace-Wells of the New York Times, but: “All the signs we have suggest that, historic or not, these midterms are likely to mark the end of a political era.” What that gives way to is a much more complicated picture in which the US will be delivered from Trump himself, but remains a country riven and undermined by what he has unleashed. By the time he is gone, Trump will have been president for eight years, and a toxic force for more than 12. That is a long time even for a normal politician. Under one who shatters norms and forces himself into the centre of everything, Trump’s effect is as if he were president for decades. Continue reading...

  • A Guardian investigation has found that despite a recommendation to slow down, leading shipping companies continue to travel above advised speeds in a key habitat for cetaceans Marine biologist Alice Barbarioli waits with her camera trained on the horizon. A few minutes earlier, the hydrophone beneath the Pelagos research vessel detected codas – the sequence of clicks sperm whales use to communicate. The sperm whale reveals its head and dorsal fin as those onboard the vessel in the Pelagos sanctuary, a conservation area established to protect marine mammals in the north-western Mediterranean, rush to take photos and note the rhythm of its breathing. After a few minutes, the animal arches its back, and begins to head back into the depths of the sea. They wait to catch a glimpse of its tail. Continue reading...

  • Young, black and fuelled by self-help mantras, they were reputedly the best live band on Earth. As their wild first sessions are rereleased, the group talk about scaring club owners – and getting kicked out of the UK Old punks might not agree on much – who was first, who was fastest, where to file the Faith/Void split LP in their record collection – but for those who saw them in their prime, Bad Brains were, unequivocally, the best live band on the planet. YouTube footage bears this out: frontman HR, born Paul D Hudson, is equal parts straining sinew and raw electricity as he bucks and contorts, punctuating rapid-fire snarls and otherworldly croons with impeccably timed backflips. The band surge around him, forging blisteringly fast punk informed by everything from the Damned and Dead Boys to P-Funk, Stevie Wonder and Chick Corea’s Return to Forever. Young, black and fuelled by an ideology that united the 1930s self-help mantras of Napoleon Hill with Rastafari, they were outliers in the already outre 70s punk scene. But while Bad Brains helped change the face of American punk as it morphed into hardcore in the early 80s, and inspired artists as diverse as Rage Against the Machine, Deftones, Lil Jon, the Roots and Beastie Boys, defeat was never far from glory as they balanced feted live performances and a scintillating run of records with an excruciating capacity for self-sabotage. She explains why she loves a work in progress, the importance of anger in mourning, and how she gave up smoking – only to become a champion vaper Had Jo Brand, who turns 70 next year, been spending a long time thinking about getting older? Had it become the subject that consumed her, and the reason why, now, she felt impelled to write a book about the vagaries of ageing? No, she says, laughing. She was simply asked if she’d like to do it. Still, it encouraged introspection about what she wanted her future to look like. “Now’s the time, if you want things, to get them in place. I think a lot of people say, ‘I really want to do that, but I’ll forget it for now.’ And then they get to a stage where they can’t.” Does she mean bucket-list things? “No, I mean … what do I mean?” Brand pauses. “I mean the ability to perhaps end your own …” She doesn’t go there, but the end to that sentence is obviously: life. • From France’s Jordan Bardella to Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, organised youth politics has produced many rightwing leaders. Democrats must catch up The leaders of the most successful populist radical right parties in western Europe have one thing in common that is often overlooked. Italy’s Matteo Salvini, Jordan Bardella from France, Jimmie Åkesson from the Sweden Democrats, and Tom Van Grieken from Belgium’s Vlaams Belang all led the youth wing of the parties they now run. These movements shaped the politicians they are today, and they are now shaping Europe’s political future. As Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, another former radical right youth-wing leader, put it : “Even more than my growth as a politician, I owe my growth as a person and as an Italian to my youth-wing activism. There is no more formative training ground than this.” And yet, until recently, we knew little about these incubation chambers of populist radical right parties. Continue reading...

  • The app for a short time showed some areas ‌subject to false nuclear ‌and chemical alerts; temporary local ceasefire expires in southern Kherson. What we know on day 1,713 Ukraine’s air force said it suspected the country’s aid raid alert app – which is used across the country to warn people of the threat of airstrikes – had been hacked . On Sunday the app for a short time showed Kyiv and other areas ‌subject to nuclear ‌and chemical alerts. An erroneous message also said Russia’s hypersonic Oreshnik missile had been deployed. “The air alert app appears to ‌have been subjected to enemy influence,” the air force said on Telegram. “There is no radiation threat! Stay calm and follow our updates on our channel!” Some hours later, Russia claimed a “massive cyber-attack” had hit its application designed to warn people of incoming drone attacks and other threats . “Attention! The mobile application of the Ministry of Emergencies of Russia has been subjected to a massive cyber-attack, enabling attackers to send false information to the public,” Moscow’s emergencies ministry posted on Telegram early on Monday. Ukraine’s military said it evacuated 167 people from areas of southern Kherson region on Sunday as a temporary local ceasefire expired – two days after buses carried residents out of the Russian-held town of Oleshky . A six-day local ceasefire in Oleshky and the surrounding area was reached after mediation efforts by US first lady Melania Trump and with the involvement of Pope Leo. Neither side reported violations after the truce began, in what one Ukrainian lawmaker described as the “biggest de-escalation since 2022”. US-mediated talks between Russia and Ukraine are set to resume this month, having been effectively frozen since the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran in February. Kherson regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin warned local people to be particularly vigilant when the ceasefire ended and to “respond immediately to warnings about Russian attacks” . A Ukrainian military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity to AFP, expressed concern that the fighting would be “worse than before” when it resumed. Russian forces on the other side of the Dnipro river, had taken advantage of the calm of the past few days to amass new troops, transport ammunition stocks, and collect intelligence on Ukrainian positions using surveillance drones, the officer said. Ukraine has resumed its attacks on Russian oil refineries in defiance of pressure from Donald Trump ahead of the US midterm elections, Luke Harding reports from Kyiv . Russian state media said on Sunday Ukrainian long-range drones had set fire to the Kstovo refinery in Nizhny Novgorod oblast, soon after a major strike against another big refinery in Samara oblast, owned by the Russian state energy company Rosneft. Trump has blamed the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy , for the rise in global fuel prices, and last month lifted US sanctions on Russian diesel. Zelenskyy said on Sunday that Ukraine would stop hitting Russian oil refineries – a key demand of Trump – if Washington provided Kyiv with powerful Patriot interceptor missiles . Speaking to Fox News on Sunday, Zelenskyy said: “We said that if you want us not to attack Russia’s refineries, they have not to attack our energy system. Another alternative, give us Patriot missiles, we will find money, not just aid.” Zelenskyy said if Washington provided the missile systems for one month Kyiv would cease attacks on Russian refineries for the same period. The Trump administration on Friday green-lit the sale of 500 Patriots to Ukraine, the state department said, but the Ukrainian president warned deliveries could take years. Ukrainian authorities have been warning for weeks that their supplies of the interceptor missiles were dwindling. Continue reading...
