The Guardian

The Guardian is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in Manchester in 1821 as The Manchester Guardian and changed its name in 1959, followed by a move to London. Along with its sister paper, The Guardian Weekly, The Guardian is part of the Guardian Media Group, owned by the Scott Trust Limited. The trust was created in 1936 to "secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity and to safeguard the journalistic freedom and liberal values of The Guardian free from commercial or political interference". The trust was converted into a limited company in 2008, with a constitution written so as to maintain for The Guardian the same protections as were built into the structure of the Scott Trust by its creators. Profits are reinvested in its journalism rather than distributed to owners or shareholders. It is considered a newspaper of record in the UK.

  • George Russell second on grid after qualifying Antonelli well placed as he nears title confirmation Even as Formula One’s young gun Kimi Antonelli remains on course to claim his first world championship on Sunday it was the veteran, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton who gave a salutary reminder that there is very much fight left in the old dog yet as he claimed a spectacular pole position for the Mexico City Grand Prix. Hamilton delivered a superb lap for Ferrari to secure his first pole for the team and just beat Mercedes’ George Russell into second. World champion in waiting Antonelli was in fourth place but remains in position to close out the title on Sunday, although Hamilton and Russell, who must win the race to have any hope of keeping the fight alive, have at least locked out the front row. • Álvarez challenges for Mbilli’s 168lb title in Riyadh Mexican star fights for first time since Crawford loss Reach out to Bryan on Bluesky or by email We may have just witnessed the round of the year in Riyadh. Nikita Zon had Jaime Munguía on the brink of defeat in a white-knuckle sixth, rocking the Mexican champion with a barrage of punches that left him barely able to stay upright. But Munguía somehow weathered the storm and came roaring back, hurting a punched-out Zon in the closing stages as the two traded hellfire in a remarkable display of courage and violence. There was controversy, too, when referee Tony Weeks stepped between the fighters as Munguía appeared close to being stopped, giving the champion precious seconds to recover. The intervention could prove decisive. Continue reading...

  • Fortune is not favouring Pierre Sage. Just when the Crystal Palace manager needed a positive result, Jean-Philippe Mateta’s early red card condemned his side to a third straight defeat in the league, leaving their manager’s position hanging by a thread. Goals from Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke ensured that Tottenham recorded a third successive victory for the first time in 616 days as they moved into the top half of the table. To put that into context, Spurs have had three full-time managers since then, so it was no wonder that Roberto De Zerbi looked so pleased at full-time. Continue reading...

  • ‘Deport!’ oozes an entirely different sense of power – one where the racist imagines they can call upon the state to act on their behalf There is a rise in racist rhetoric surrounding deportation. This is clearly influenced by the increased use of deportation against immigrants and asylum seekers worldwide, particularly in the United States. But my concern here is not so much the governmental practice itself as the racist language that it has helped disseminate and legitimise: I write something on X, and some random racist who dislikes what I wrote decides that because my name is Ghassan Hage I must be a potentially deportable subject and simply writes “deport” as a comment. Nasser Mashni, the president of the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network, notes in Crikey that “deport” is “the comment most often left on anything I post”. Continue reading...

  • On Danni Smith’s first date with Kev, she made a few disclosures and expected him to skol his beer and wish her well – but his response surprised her Find more stories from the moment I knew series In September 2023 I’d been divorced for about a year. At 59 I thought to myself, “surely there’s got to be a little bit more love that I could give in my life”. But I was also keenly aware that not many people find romance organically these days. I gave Bumble a go, had some pretty average dates and thought it wasn’t for me, but I decided to give it one last shot. It was Kev’s smile and his eyes that caught my attention. His profile said travel was really important to him, which gave me a bit of a laugh because I have huge anxiety issues around holidaying of any sort. We exchanged a few texts and decided to arrange a date. It was nothing fancy, just a few drinks at a bar in a bayside suburb of Melbourne. Continue reading...

  • Legal challenges to Donald Trump’s proposed memorial arch are mounting even as its construction is imminent The legal challenges to Donald Trump ’s proposed memorial arch are mounting, with the District of Columbia and Virginia suing in federal court on Saturday as the administration says construction could begin as early as next week. There are now three lawsuits calling for a halt to potential work on a monument that would rise 250ft (76 meters) on a patch of grass off the bridge that spans the Potomac River, connecting the city with the Arlington national cemetery. That would make the arch 100ft taller (30 meters) than the Statue of Liberty is from its base to the top of the torch. Continue reading...
