The Guardian

The Guardian is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in Manchester in 1821 as The Manchester Guardian and changed its name in 1959, followed by a move to London. Along with its sister paper, The Guardian Weekly, The Guardian is part of the Guardian Media Group, owned by the Scott Trust Limited. The trust was created in 1936 to "secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity and to safeguard the journalistic freedom and liberal values of The Guardian free from commercial or political interference". The trust was converted into a limited company in 2008, with a constitution written so as to maintain for The Guardian the same protections as were built into the structure of the Scott Trust by its creators. Profits are reinvested in its journalism rather than distributed to owners or shareholders. It is considered a newspaper of record in the UK.

  • Álvarez challenges for Mbilli’s 168lb title in Riyadh Mexican star fights for first time since Crawford loss Reach out to Bryan on Bluesky or by email We may have just witnessed the round of the year in Riyadh. Nikita Zon had Jaime Munguía on the brink of defeat in a white-knuckle sixth, rocking the Mexican champion with a barrage of punches that left him barely able to stay upright. But Munguía somehow weathered the storm and came roaring back, hurting a punched-out Zon in the closing stages as the two traded hellfire in a remarkable display of courage and violence. There was controversy, too, when referee Tony Weeks stepped between the fighters as Munguía appeared close to being stopped, giving the champion precious seconds to recover. The intervention could prove decisive. Continue reading...

  • Ruling ‘with prejudice’ means US president may not amend or refile his lawsuit over his alleged birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein A US judge dismissed Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal with prejudice on Saturday, according to a court filing, bringing an end to his legal challenge over the newspaper’s reporting on his alleged birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein. The decision follows an earlier dismissal in April that had allowed Trump to revise his complaint. As of Saturday, the case is dismissed with prejudice, meaning the lawsuit cannot be amended or refiled. Continue reading...

  • Fortune is not favouring Pierre Sage. Just when the Crystal Palace manager needed a positive result, Jean-Philippe Mateta’s early red card condemned his side to a third straight defeat in the league, leaving their manager’s position hanging by a thread. Goals from Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke ensured that Tottenham recorded a third successive victory for the first time in 616 days as they moved into the top half of the table. To put that into context, Spurs have had three full-time managers since then, so it was no wonder that Roberto De Zerbi looked so pleased at full-time. Continue reading...

  • ‘Deport!’ oozes an entirely different sense of power – one where the racist imagines they can call upon the state to act on their behalf There is a rise in racist rhetoric surrounding deportation. This is clearly influenced by the increased use of deportation against immigrants and asylum seekers worldwide, particularly in the United States. But my concern here is not so much the governmental practice itself as the racist language that it has helped disseminate and legitimise: I write something on X, and some random racist who dislikes what I wrote decides that because my name is Ghassan Hage I must be a potentially deportable subject and simply writes “deport” as a comment. Nasser Mashni, the president of the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network, notes in Crikey that “deport” is “the comment most often left on anything I post”. Continue reading...

At 59 I thought to myself, “surely there’s got to be a little bit more love that I could give in my life”. But I was also keenly aware that not many people find romance organically these days. I gave Bumble a go, had some pretty average dates and thought it wasn’t for me, but I decided to give it one last shot. It was Kev’s smile and his eyes that caught my attention. His profile said travel was really important to him, which gave me a bit of a laugh because I have huge anxiety issues around holidaying of any sort. We exchanged a few texts and decided to arrange a date. It was nothing fancy, just a few drinks at a bar in a bayside suburb of Melbourne. Continue reading...

  • Legal challenges to Donald Trump’s proposed memorial arch are mounting even as its construction is imminent The legal challenges to Donald Trump ’s proposed memorial arch are mounting, with the District of Columbia and Virginia suing in federal court on Saturday as the administration says construction could begin as early as next week. There are now three lawsuits calling for a halt to potential work on a monument that would rise 250ft (76 meters) on a patch of grass off the bridge that spans the Potomac River, connecting the city with the Arlington national cemetery. That would make the arch 100ft taller (30 meters) than the Statue of Liberty is from its base to the top of the torch. Continue reading...

  • Like Linus with his blankie, Bearaby’s Lounger is my constant companion when the weather gets brisk My wife swears by weighted blankets to sleep – and now I understand why Sign up for the Filter US newsletter, your weekly guide to buying fewer, better things In the early months of the pandemic, I enjoyed a brief flirtation with a 15lb weighted blanket from Amazon , but eventually abandoned it because it was impossible to launder and also sort of ugly. A few years later, I tried a different option – the sleep brand Bearaby’s flagship weighted blanket, an almost-but-not-quite-right solution that worked but eventually became cumbersome. In a frenzied afternoon spent deep cleaning, I set that one aside and eventually heaved it into the back of my sister’s Jeep for her. Even though those two blankets didn’t stick, I still wanted something similar – just not ugly, large or hard to handle. Though I run hot and my apartment is often a furnace in the winter, my ideal leisure situation is enjoying the crisp air blowing in through a cracked window from the cozy and warm nest I’ve made on my sofa. Bearaby came to my rescue once more with the Lounger , a combination heated and weighted blanket that has been in my life for three years and is now my favorite thing in my apartment once winter sets in. • On the Bering Sea, Unalaska is the US’s most productive seafood port, employing thousands of workers. But Trump’s cuts, and his disastrous war with Iran, have caused chaos – and put Republican control of Congress at risk It was less than 17 hours until the start of Alaska’s lucrative Bering Sea crab season, and Oystein Lone was standing on a dock in the city of Unalaska, preparing to embark in rough conditions. The problem wasn’t the next day’s forecast of 60mph gusts, which would kick up white-capped swells and make crabbing, already one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States, even more hazardous. Nor was it the question of whether there’d be enough red king, tanner and snow crabs to go around – state regulators had, in fact, announced higher quotas for the season. Continue reading...

  • Legal experts welcome judge’s rejection of firing of James Comey’s daughter prosecutor but warn an appeal is likely A recent legal ruling against an effort to fire the star-prosecutor daughter of a former FBI chief targeted by Donald Trump could send a strong message about politicized firings – and influence other judges weighing similar cases, legal veterans said. Judge Jesse Furman ruled this week that the Department of Justice’s firing of assistant US attorney Maurene Comey without cause was unlawful. Comey, the daughter of former FBI director James Comey, successfully litigated numerous high-profile cases during her tenure at the southern district of New York, including guilty verdicts against Ghislaine Maxwell and Sean “Diddy” Combs. • Get ready for another week of agonising over the sorry state of Manchester United. The legends of old will rage, clips of a fuming Gary Neville will fly around social media, the airwaves will reverberate with complaints from angry supporters and by the time United play again there is every chance a new manager will be in the dugout. There were echoes of Erik ten Hag’s final game in charge as the walls closed in on Michael Carrick here on Saturday. United missed a series of golden chances when the scores were level, just as they did when Ten Hag lost to West Ham a day before his sacking two years ago, and Chelsea made the most of the reprieve after initially delivering a performance so bad it had you worrying for the nascent Xabi Alonso project. • The administration’s efforts have raised concerns among experts about potential disruptions after election day Donald Trump is waging a brazen effort to interfere with voting in this year’s midterm elections, escalating concerns that the federal government will try to slow down certification of election results – a strategy that could create chaos when the new Congress is seated next year. Experts are certain the administration’s efforts to subvert America’s elections will not work.
