  • It’s hard to tell exactly when AI slop stopped being just a punchline involving Will Smith eating spaghetti and started feeling dangerous. That’s actually part of the problem. This year, many of the popular AI tools that used to struggle with the number of fingers on a human hand gained the ability to generate photorealistic […]

  • Sweden has given the world many wonderful gifts. Zara Larsson, obviously. Spotify and social democracy. And Ikea, the company that showed us you can furnish your apartment, stylishly and affordably, with the contents of a few flatpack boxes. Sweden’s talent for mass-producing clever, easy-to-assemble home fixtures also extends to something much bigger than bookshelves and […]

  • Future Perfect

The US faces a huge housing shortage, outdated transportation systems, a dearth of affordable childcare, and an urgent need for substantial clean energy. But why haven’t we been able to build out all of the things we so acutely need? Fortunately, these problems are not without solutions. We just need to find them. And for […]

Welcome to The Logoff: It’s a whole new world for President Donald Trump. What’s happening? So far, surprisingly little: As we wrote yesterday, Trump has largely stayed quiet since […]

As the dust from Tuesday’s elections continues to settle, Republicans are looking around their shrunken ranks and wondering precisely where they went wrong on this one. President Donald Trump, who’s been generally (and surprisingly) […]

  • Democrats had a better night than anyone expected on Tuesday, winning sweeping majorities in both the House and the Senate as voters turned away from President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Now, they have to figure out how to govern and contend with two more years of Trump’s presidency — and gear up to […]

  • Democrats just partied like it’s 1974. On Tuesday night, they pulled off the largest midterm victory since the post-Watergate wave. Democratic Senate candidates conquered longtime Republican strongholds like Kansas and Texas — and probably (in the view of the internet’s gamblers) Mississippi and Alaska. When the dust settles, and all ballots are tallied, Democrats are […]

  • One of the most consequential subplots of the 2026 elections is that young voters swung back toward Democrats — hard. Early data shows that 66 percent of adults under 30 voted for a Democrat for the House of Representatives, compared to just 31 percent who voted for a Republican — a gap of 35 percentage […]

  • In this week’s midterm elections, many Democrats won n a landslide. Also on the winning side of many ballot decisions: animals. First, voters in Washington, DC, and Denver, Colorado, decisively supported a ban on the sale of foie gras — duck liver made by force-feeding the animals. In Colorado, voters opposed a constitutional amendment that […]

  • In a state of post-election bliss, John Nicely drove his daily school bus route on Wednesday morning through the tiny town of Perry, Ohio, a few miles south of Lake Erie. “So, when are you taking down the signs, Mr. Nicely?” his students asked him as they filed inside, “because you kicked butt, buddy.” They […]

This story appeared in Today, Explained, a daily newsletter that helps you understand the most compelling news and stories of the day. Subscribe here. Many a pundit spent this morning with his or her thesaurus, seeking aquatic metaphors more portentous than “wave.” Call it a blue deluge. A blue 100-year flood. A blue tsunami — a blunami! — […]

  • Republicans began picking through their party’s post-midterms wreckage Wednesday to ask about — and argue over — how things went so, so wrong in President Donald Trump’s second term. Tuesday’s blue tsunami not only washed out Republicans’ House and Senate majorities, it carried Democrats into office even in deep red strongholds like South Carolina, Kansas, […]

  • If you paid attention to Supreme Court litigation during the Biden administration, you would have noticed a surprisingly high number of cases with names like Biden v. Texas or United States v. Texas. Texas’s outgoing attorney general, Ken Paxton, once bragged that he sued the Biden administration 106 times during his time as Texas’s top […]

  • On Tuesday night, voters cast their ballots in favor of abortion access in Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia, reflecting the continued popularity of the issue across red, blue, and purple states, even as it fell out of the political conversation compared to other topics this cycle. All told, the abortion rights victories in this latest election […]

  • Welcome to The Midterms, Actually. Every week I’ll be writing about two things: one big idea or trend I see forming, and one thing I’m hearing from a voice on the ground. Let’s get into it. One big idea Tuesday night, in a midterm election for the ages, Democrats notched sweeping victories across the country. […]

  • It’s hard to put into words how good Tuesday night was for Democrats: “Blue wave” falls short, and even “bluenami” may not be apt for an election in which Republicans lost Senate races in Kansas and South Carolina, along with every major statewide race in Texas and too many more to count across the country […]

  • On election night in Texas, the impossible became possible. Democrats won the governor’s seat for the first time since the 1990s and appear to be on their way to securing control of the state House too. Those massive, unexpected wins have now opened the window for a major policy change that has long been closed: […]

  • Democrats’ massive wins on election night in Congress — and state races across the country — have opened the door for the party to deliver on one of its biggest campaign promises: making people’s healthcare cheaper. When Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries declared victory on Tuesday night, he promised that his new majority would try […]

  • There’s been a lot of “communist” talk on the midterms campaign trail. It’s become President Donald Trump’s favorite new perceived threat coming from the left. But it’s actually not new at all. US politicians, especially on the right, have long described communism as a threat to the American way of life. As a result, the […]
