  • When Abdul El-Sayed narrowly won the Democratic nomination for an open Senate seat in Michigan back in August, it teed up the first true swing-state test for the party’s left faction, which had largely been confined to representing progressive enclaves in the Trump era. They just passed that test. El-Sayed defeated GOP nominee Mike Rogers, […]

  • On May 3, 2016 — the night Donald Trump effectively clinched the Republican Party’s presidential nomination for the first time — then-Sen. Lindsey Graham tweeted, “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed…….and we will deserve it.” Graham was scarcely alone in voicing such sentiments. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, former Gov. Jeb Bush, and most political […]

  • Democrats won a critical US Senate seat on Tuesday, as Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins conceded her long-held seat to Democratic challenger Troy Jackson just after midnight. Collins, who has been serving for nearly 30 years, has for years been able to beat back rivals in her increasingly blue state, where residents valued her ability […]

  • Voters just ushered the United States into the post-Trump era. The ballots are still being counted, and key races are still being called, but here’s the short version of the midterm election: It’s a blue tsunami. Democrats looked set to take full control of Congress; they flipped crucial seats and won state-level offices where they’d […]

  • The Democratic Senate victories in Texas and Kansas on Tuesday night were about more than just turning two red states blue — which, to be sure, is historic enough. They also signal the rise of a new kind of Democratic politics in the late Trump era — a more explicitly religious one. In Texas, James Talarico, […]

This was already a record-breaking election, even before the polls opened today. Campaigns and their allies poured record sums into political advertising. A near-record number of lawmakers are retiring or running for a different […]

  • President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the US would soon cut off military aid to Israel. During an Election Day interview with Fox & Friends, Trump said of Israel, “We were giving them $4 billion but it’s cut off at the end of the year.” When asked to explain this position, Trump said that Israel […]

  • There was one significant surprise during the Supreme Court’s Tuesday argument in St. Mary Catholic Parish v. Roy, a case asking whether Colorado may require schools that accept state funding to treat LGBTQ families and students the same way they treat anyone else. For a brief moment, Chief Justice John Roberts seemed like he might […]

  • The dust is beginning to settle a week after Israel’s first national election since Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023, and the war Israel waged on Gaza in response. Neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor his opponents won the 61 parliamentary seats needed to govern. Now the fate of the next government hinges on a […]

  • The outcome of the midterm elections is perhaps the single most important factor in determining how the final two years of Donald Trump’s presidency will play out — and what impact it will have on people’s lives in the United States and around the world. If Republicans defy the polls and hold both chambers, Trump […]

  • This story appeared in Today, Explained, a daily newsletter that helps you understand the most compelling news and stories of the day. Subscribe here. We’re at T-minus eight hours until Election Day — at least here on the East Coast — and Democrats are likely feeling good about their electoral odds right now. The party is strongly favored […]

  • Here’s a hot take: The outcome of the 2026 midterms is unlikely to turn on close races in California. California has no statewide races that are expected to be close, and it is a solid blue state that recently redrew its US House maps to maximize Democratic gains. So it’s a bit baffling that the […]

  • With the midterms now upon us, polls continue to suggest that we’re headed for a blue wave election. One thing that might stop it is if Republican voters come out in big numbers on Election Day. But is MAGA even united behind their candidates? And do they have a plan to motivate a base that […]

  • Let’s say that you’re savagely beaten by a federal officer despite the fact that you committed no crime. Or maybe your home is ransacked by FBI agents who didn’t even bother to get a warrant. Or maybe you’re shot in cold blood by immigration officials engaged in a paramilitary occupation of your home city. The […]

  • Conventional wisdom holds that young voters are idealistic and socially progressive dreamers, while older voters are hard-headed, pragmatic, and much more attuned to pocketbook issues. Conventional wisdom, meet Gen Z. Between 2020 and 2024, voters in this cohort swung right by more than 20 percentage points — but now they’re boomeranging back away from President […]

  • Democrats in Michigan spent the weekend before Election Day angrily relitigating their Senate primary from months earlier after a defeated candidate, Rep. Haley Stevens, took back her endorsement of Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed — and backed the Republican instead. On the surface, the fight gets to the heart of issues that have divided Democrats all year […]
