| The Free Press | Tyler Cowen: How to Outrun the AI HackersPaid postThe Free Press Systems that guard our email and bank accounts are vulnerable to attacks, but building on the best defenses will buy time and prevent a crisis, writes Tyler Cowen. AI commentator Zvi Mowshowitz declared: “It was the probably worst day in cybersecurity history. So far.” The day in question was last Thursday, when news that AI had detected a critical flaw in PHP, a programming language used for building websites, leaked before the fix was available. That sent much of the internet running for patches and fixes, and the result probably will be that many older websites end up permanently dysfunctional. Many governments even took their websites offline for a while, to limit the risk of hacking. We are likely to survive this particular episode without the economy crashing down. But as Zvi’s comment indicated, other problems will arise in the future and they may be far more serious. One issue I have followed with special interest is cryptography. Throughout the tech industry, there is a slowly rising worry about AI breakthroughs in cryptography, which, in theory, could throw open the front door of every email, online transaction, and bank account. Recent headlines tell the story. “Vitalik Buterin Warns AI Could Break Lattice Cryptography Within Two Years,” reads one, announcing that the cryptocurrency creator has lost faith in systems recently thought to be invulnerable. Even more daunting: “Claude AI Solves 25-Year NSA Cryptography Mystery in Just 30 Minutes.” Now that an AI model from Anthropic (where I am an economic adviser) has cracked through a barrier no human has managed, whether any barrier is safe has become a live question. | 0.70● | |

| Axios | Anthropic's Claude bypassed a paywall to access Georgia voter data without authorizationAxios Anthropic's Claude accessed publicly available Georgia voter data without human authorization, a disclosure sure to add to growing concerns about AI security ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Why it matters: AI giants Anthropic and OpenAI have continued to make disclosures about agents taking unauthorized or unintended actions, raising alarms about advancing model capabilities and the extent of human control. Driving the news: In a training run, Claude accessed aggregate vote counts, pulling data that the state makes available to the public for a fee. It didn't access the state's voter registration system or change or pull any voting records, an Anthropic spokesperson said. However, the model bypassed a paywall in accessing the information, according to Georgia officials and Anthropic. "The model was being used internally for a statistics project to pull public data," the Anthropic spokesperson said. "Without being asked to, the model requested a token to query a dashboard that contained information normally available for a fee. We have since put in place mitigations to block these kinds of actions." The company notified the Georgia secretary of state's office and the White House weeks ago but administration officials urged the Georgia Secretary of State's office to make a public disclosure sooner, a source familiar told Axios. Those requests went unheeded, the source said. The bottom line : Anthropic has previously been in the administration's crosshairs for inadequately disclosing AI incidents. Now it's Georgia's turn. | 0.70 | |

| Hacker News: Front Page | Ask HN: What is the main bottleneck facing Agentic AI today?Hacker News: Front Page Hey guys, today I read a statistic that showed that Agentic traffic surpassed human traffic on the internet and that statistic was very shocking to me. At the same time I saw another statistic that showed only 10% of agents built, actually get into production. These two statistics seemed ironic to me. So I wondered to myself what is the major bottleneck that is causing a lot of the agents that are being built not get into production and what is the infrastructure missing to make Agentic traffic to thrive even more?
