AxiosAnthropic's Claude bypassed a paywall to access Georgia voter data without authorizationAxios

Anthropic's Claude accessed publicly available Georgia voter data without human authorization, a disclosure sure to add to growing concerns about AI security ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Why it matters: AI giants Anthropic and OpenAI have continued to make disclosures about agents taking unauthorized or unintended actions, raising alarms about advancing model capabilities and the extent of human control. Driving the news: In a training run, Claude accessed aggregate vote counts, pulling data that the state makes available to the public for a fee. It didn't access the state's voter registration system or change or pull any voting records, an Anthropic spokesperson said. However, the model bypassed a paywall in accessing the information, according to Georgia officials and Anthropic. "The model was being used internally for a statistics project to pull public data," the Anthropic spokesperson said. "Without being asked to, the model requested a token to query a dashboard that contained information normally available for a fee. We have since put in place mitigations to block these kinds of actions." The company notified the Georgia secretary of state's office and the White House weeks ago but administration officials urged the Georgia Secretary of State's office to make a public disclosure sooner, a source familiar told Axios. Those requests went unheeded, the source said. The bottom line : Anthropic has previously been in the administration's crosshairs for inadequately disclosing AI incidents. Now it's Georgia's turn.

The GuardianOpposition deepfake video sparks outrage in Spain ahead of electionThe Guardian

Video shows AI likenesses of people linked to Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist party appearing to admit to wrongdoing A political ad from Spain’s main opposition party that used a deepfake video of the prime minister’s wife has sparked outrage and set off a wider debate on AI, as the deeply polarised country gears up for general elections next month. Launched this week across the social media channels of the conservative People’s party (PP), the video used artificial intelligence to manipulate the likenesses of various people linked to Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist party and appeared to show them admitting to acts such as soliciting prostitutes and taking kickbacks. Democracy Now!Brazil Elections: How AI, Meta and Evangelicals Could Sway the Presidential Race for BolsonaroDemocracy Now!

Brazilian voters are heading to the polls on Sunday for the presidential runoff between incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and far-right Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, with polls showing a tight race that will decide whether Brazil remains led by the left or joins the right-wing surge across Latin America. According to The Intercept Brasil , Bolsonaro’s campaign paid 600,000 Brazilian reais (about $119,000 USD ) to a U.S. company, Elytron, that specializes in election manipulation, including through online disinformation and “psychological warfare techniques” to undermine opponents. Reporter Laís Martins says that while it’s not clear whether or how the Bolsonaro campaign used Elytron’s services, it adds to suspicion of U.S. interference in the election, including Meta’s restrictions on President Lula’s social media profiles. “We’ve seen evidence pile up that something is not right, that this playing field is not equal,” says Martins.
