| The Guardian | As mega-hit Into the Woods wows the West End, what’s the secret weapon of this Sondheim spectacular? The Guardian With its shimmering forest and its plunge into darkness and destruction, this fairytale romp bagged an Olivier for its lighting – and, reveals designer Aideen Malone, it wasn’t even finished For a minute I worry that Aideen Malone might return her Olivier award. “It’s funny that I won an award for it, because I would say Into the Woods is one of the most unfinished pieces I have ever done,” declares the lighting designer. “There was a lot of detail we never got a chance to finish. We ran out of time – big time!” Luckily, the judges and audiences disagreed. If you want to see enchantment, take yourself to Stephen Sondheim ’s musical set in the twisted world of fairytale. Cinderella, Red Riding Hood and others bounce into the forest, which shimmers in a weave of powdery, gleaming branches and light angling through all the trees. Now transferred to the West End from London’s Bridge theatre , it’s a breathtaking piece of design for a seriously playful musical. Continue reading... | 0.30 | |

| The Guardian | He wants to clean up the city and banish high prices. But who is ‘London’s Batman’?The Guardian The caped crusader is paying for hospital parking fines, giving out fuel to drivers – and sponsoring the return of cut-priced Freddo bars In the harsh light of day, a caped crusader storms the streets of London to tackle a crime that has long blighted the capital: littering. “When I said I wanted to save London, I meant it. I will not stop until every single bit of trash is off the streets,” he says in a viral video, narrated in his trademark deep, husky and (suspiciously) American voice, joined by a gang of hooded helpers clearing rubbish-strewn streets in Tower Hamlets. | The Guardian | Everyone hates Oxford Street. Will pedestrianisation save it?The Guardian In a few days the busiest shopping street in Europe will be closed to traffic. The hope is that an unloved and polluted thoroughfare will turn into somewhere that people actually want to spend time In February, the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced that Britain’s best-known thoroughfare, Oxford Street, would be pedestrianised. To the surprise of every Londoner that I have spoken to in the past few months, it is actually happening. On Monday 26 October, the busiest shopping street in Europe – or, precisely, half of its 1.2-mile stretch – will be closed to traffic, putting an end to several decades of bitter arguments, obstructions and delays. Cars, lorries, vans, taxis, buses, bicycles, ebikes, scooters will be banned. Nothing but pedestrians (and emergency vehicles) will be allowed in. This change will mark the most remarkable transformation to the streetscape of central London since at least 2003, when Trafalgar Square was turned from a glorified roundabout into one of London’s most recognisable public spaces. It will also form the most visible part of the mayor’s legacy, whether or not Khan runs for a fourth term in 2028. Three years ago, Khan published a memoir and manifesto, Breathe , attributing his asthma to growing up inhaling London’s polluted air. For the mayor, pedestrianising Oxford Street is the culmination of a mission to create a greener city that is oriented around public health, walking and cycling. Continue reading... | 0.50 |
