The Guardian‘My death was reported in Rolling Stone’: how the Zombies made Time of the SeasonThe Guardian

‘A year after we broke up, we heard that two bands had started touring the US as the Zombies. One group said they were the originals but with a new singer – because I’d been killed in a car crash’ Our first single, She’s Not There , was one of the first songs I wrote, when I was 18. It remained our only hit in the UK by the time we recorded our second album, Odessey and Oracle , in 1967 – this was only three years later but it felt like a lifetime. We’d recently signed to CBS and had been given £1,000, which even then was not a huge amount of money. We recorded pretty quickly in a few sessions spread over six months, producing ourselves for the first time. Continue reading...

The GuardianI used to think I had impeccable taste in music. My kids taught me to stop being a snob | Myke BartlettThe Guardian

Music may not define them in the way it defined many of my generation, but my children still know a good tune when they hear one There was a moment, some years ago in a St Kilda summer, when our family was driving along a busy street, the car windows down, belting out Eric Carmen’s Make Me Lose Control. I had one of those out-of-body experiences parents sometimes get, where you get a clear view of your younger, cooler self looking on in a state of acute embarrassment and despair. How the hell had this happened? Continue reading...

The Guardian‘People think songwriters go around crying all the time’: Jimmy Webb on his epic hits – and wild drinking daysThe Guardian

From Wichita Lineman to MacArthur Park, he penned masterpieces. As Jimmy Webb resurrects his unheard numbers, he recalls writing for Dolly, Frank and Glen – and the night Richard Harris stripped off and disappeared ‘Flat for 50 miles,” recalls Jimmy Webb, remembering the desolate stretch of Oklahoma that inspired his classic song, Wichita Lineman. “Nothing out there except endless railroad tracks and telephone poles. Then suddenly there’s a guy at the top of one of the poles. He’s got his phone, he’s talking to somebody and then … whoosh! He goes by. I never saw him again, but I never forgot him.” Webb immortalised the unknown telephone worker’s solitude (and imagined conversation with a distant lover) with a 1968 smash hit for Glen Campbell. “But you wouldn’t believe what some people thought it was about,” chuckles the songwriter, now a chatty, self-effacing 80-year-old, video-calling from his kitchen in Long Island. “One guy who wrote to me thought it was about a football lineman, and a woman thought the young man in the song gets electrocuted because ‘the Wichita lineman is still on the line’.” Continue reading...

The GuardianMusic Against the Night by Yiyun Li review – a virtuosic interrogation of the power of artThe Guardian

What does it cost, to live your life in the hope of immortality? Li examines the gulf between talent and genius through the marriage of two real-life musicians In his recently published A History of the Novel in Britain , Philip Hensher makes a bold claim. Historical novels, he tells us, don’t last. However popular and prestigious a historical novel might be in its day, it will almost always get thrown overboard as the ship of literary culture sails on, piled high with novels of contemporary life. He might be on to something. Who now prefers Walter Scott to Jane Austen? The historical novel risks a double obsolescence, courting a future in which it has become an old-fashioned vision of an old-fashioned time. However much this news might dismay writers of historical novels, Hensher is untroubled: “As readers enjoying our contemporaries, we should not let our readerly pleasures be affected by the probability of ultimate oblivion.” Will the future, what there is of it, rate Wolf Hall as highly as we do? It doesn’t matter. Posterity, as Gore Vidal once wrote, is “a permanent darkness where no whistle sounds”. What matters is us, now, what we make of history and of our lives – in our novels and elsewhere. Continue reading...

The GuardianNatasha Bedingfield looks back: ‘I had hits in the US that weren’t released in England. It was like being banished’The Guardian

The singer-songwriter on her unconventional education, her brother Daniel, and her quest to write a classic like Purple Rain Born in London in 1981, Natasha Bedingfield is a singer and songwriter. Her 2004 debut album, Unwritten, sold more than 2.3m copies and featured the No 1 single These Words. She has released three further albums, scoring UK Top 10 hits and success in the US with Pocketful of Sunshine. Nearly two decades after it was released, her single Unwritten became a viral TikTok hit in 2021. Her new single, Dot Dot Dot, is out now. This was taken at Hilly Fields park in south -east London. I’m dressed in a sweet little tracksuit. I was a cute kid: I sucked my thumb until I was 11 and I had a sheepskin that I sniffed. But if anyone actually said I was cute, I’d reply: “No, I’m not!” I wanted to be taken seriously. That word made me think that nobody was listening to what I had to say. Continue reading...

The Guardian‘I’d rather live through something publicly than escape it privately’: Jack Antonoff on survivor’s guilt, songwriting and his shock breakupThe Guardian

Whether he’s playing the role of soul-baring artist or starry producer, the Bleachers frontman strives to keep his integrity intact. He weighs in on Ed Sheeran, his love of working on ‘high-stakes’ albums and why he’ll never stop singing about the end of his marriage Sitting in the restaurant of a Denver hotel, in the middle of a US tour with his band Bleachers, Jack Antonoff shrugs. “There’s this intense need to figure me out,” he frowns, “and I don’t really know where it comes from, because I keep explaining all of it. ” He has a point. For the last 12 years, Bleachers have released a succession of albums packed with Antonoff’s strikingly personal and frank songs. Being strikingly personal and frank was the whole point. Antonoff had previously been guitarist in Fun, a pop-rock band who went supernova with their 2011 single We Are Young. Despite co-writing a song that sold 10m copies in the US alone, Antonoff says he “hated” the experience “because I wasn’t the leader, they weren’t my words, and I needed to write a song that if I fucking died tomorrow would be my life story”. The Guardian‘I’m not someone who has sex to music. I like uncomfortable silence’: Katherine Ryan’s honest playlistThe Guardian

The comedian unashamedly loves the Spice Girls’ Wannabe and cries to Boyz II Men, but which novelty song changed her life? The first song I fell in love with My mother would sing and dance and cook and clean in the kitchen, as many 80s moms did, to divas like Madonna and Paula Abdul. Material Girl made me think: “This is who I want to be.” The first single I bought I bought three records at the same time – Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette, a Sheryl Crow single and Waterfalls by TLC – from Sam the Record Man in Sarnia, Ontario, with money I’d saved up from doing chores around the house. My uncle was always trying to influence me with Canadian music, and he wasn’t wrong for doing so. Continue reading...

The GuardianAdd to playlist: the gloriously boisterous grime-metal of Native James and the week’s best new tracksThe Guardian

Filtering alt influences and eskibeats through a distinctly Black British point of view, the Ipswich rapper’s scorched-earth rage sounds like a lot of fun From Ipswich, UK Recommended if you like Linkin Park, Kano, Bob Vylan Up next New single Dumb Bruddah released via SharpTone Records on 30 October “Laaa!” growls Native James on his 2025 track Fallen, stretching a wicked fried scream over more traditionally poppy “la-la-la” chants like a hair-raising metal frontman. Because, well, that’s what he is. But James is also a pretty deft rapper, the kind of artist who grew up listening to Evanescence during school lunchtimes then went home and studied first-wave grime on Channel U. The preceding verse on Fallen rattles through quick-witted bars over bouncy nu-metal riffs, blending Jamaican Patois with The Lion King references for a scorched-earth unmasking of his “demon within”. He’s raging in every sense of the word – and it sounds like a hell of a lot of fun. Continue reading...
