The Guardian
The Guardian is a British daily newspaper. It was founded in Manchester in 1821 as The Manchester Guardian and changed its name in 1959, followed by a move to London. Along with its sister paper, The Guardian Weekly, The Guardian is part of the Guardian Media Group, owned by the Scott Trust Limited. The trust was created in 1936 to "secure the financial and editorial independence of The Guardian in perpetuity and to safeguard the journalistic freedom and liberal values of The Guardian free from commercial or political interference". The trust was converted into a limited company in 2008, with a constitution written so as to maintain for The Guardian the same protections as were built into the structure of the Scott Trust by its creators. Profits are reinvested in its journalism rather than distributed to owners or shareholders. It is considered a newspaper of record in the UK.

Oklahoma City ThunderGuard stretchered off court after apparent serious injury Team will learn more about status on Monday Shai-Gilgeous Alexander scored 34 points and the Oklahoma City Thunder stayed undefeated but they lost All-Star guard Jalen Williams to what appeared to be a serious leg injury during their 108-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night. Oklahoma City won their third straight game to start the season but lost three players to injury, including Williams, who went down hard on a drive to the basket with 1:14 left. The guard’s left leg gave way as he landed and his foot bent at an unnatural angle. The 25-year-old left the court on a stretcher with towels covering his injured leg. He covered his mouth with his hands when he looked down at the injury while Gilgeous Alexander and players on both teams appeared to be in shock. Continue reading...

Ukraine will not discuss limits to its armed forces or enforced neutrality at November meeting, president says. What we know on day 1,706 A trilateral meeting between Kyiv, Washington and Moscow will take place in November aiming to restart stalled Russia-Ukraine peace talks, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said . “We are ready to talk. If it’s a territorial issue, it must be addressed at a leadership level. Other issues fall within the remit of the technical groups. All this can therefore be discussed in November,” the Ukrainian president said on Sunday in an interview. Zelenskyy also renewed his push for a meeting between him and Vladimir Putin, believing that Putin is the only person in Russia who can make major decisions to end the war. Zelenskyy says that at the trilateral talks, Ukraine will not discuss limits to its armed forces, or enforced postwar neutrality . Kyiv has long sought entry into Nato despite the reticence of some members. Meanwhile, US warnings about imminent Russian ballistic missile strikes, critical to Ukraine’s air defences, have been fully restored , according to Zelenskyy. He told Ukraine’s TSN television channel that SpaceX’s Starshield satellite internet had been working at speeds of up to 420km/h since early on Saturday, after a meeting with the US special envoy Steve Witkoff in Oslo. Starshield was throttled earlier in October amid diplomatic pressure on Kyiv from Washington. The US has been trying to pressure Ukraine to suspend strikes on Russian oil refineries , which it says push energy prices higher. However, Zelenskyy has repeatedly said Kyiv will only stop the strikes if Moscow stops hitting Ukraine’s power infrastructure, or if the US allows Ukraine to use of Starshield over Russia to detect launch places of its ballistic missiles, or if it supplies Ukraine with Patriot missiles. Zelenskyy on Sunday said Russia had launched nearly 2,300 drones targeting Ukrainian cities over the past week , renewing his call on western allies to speed up deliveries of interceptors. “This week alone, Russia has launched about 1,600 guided bombs, 48 missiles of various types, including ballistic missiles, and almost 2,300 strike drones at Ukraine,” he wrote in an online post. Russia’s defence ministry said on Sunday its drones had struck a cargo vessel bound for the Black Sea port of Chornomorsk in an overnight attack and another cargo vessel en route to the port of Odesa during the day. The ministry said the vessels were being used to supply the Ukrainian army. Russian forces also hit a logistics centre, a distribution centre and a logistics terminal in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv overnight. Reuters could not confirm the reports. A Ukrainian drone attack overnight on the Russian border city of Belgorod killed three people and injured 13, local authorities said on Sunday , while a separate drone strike later in the day killed another person. The overnight attack on Belgorod damaged 30 apartment buildings, regional governor Alexander Shuvayev said. The presidential election in Bulgaria on Sunday ended inconclusively, with the next head of state to be picked in a runoff. In a surprisingly strong performance, the candidate of the pro-western reformist opposition, Andrey Gyurov, will face the incumbent leftist president, Iliana Yotova. Iotova opposes military aid to Ukraine and favours dialogue with Russia, while Gyurov has often expressed firm support for Kyiv . The vote was held amid security concerns after a series of drone attacks on ships in the Black Sea . Continue reading...

ChinaThe fifth plenum comes against a backdrop of years of purges that have had some analysts wondering if the issue is corruption or a lack of loyalty When Xi Jinping came to power in 2012, he pledged to stamp out corruption all through the ranks of the Communist party. More than a decade later, the pace of investigations has not slowed. Last year, China’s disciplinary authorities opened investigations into more than 1 million people, including more than 100 officials at or above ministerial or provincial level. As Chinese Communist party (CCP) officials prepare for an important meeting this week discipline – and party loyalty – is high on the agenda. For those who try to read the tea leaves of elite Chinese politics, concern about the apparent lack of discipline is dominating CCP discussions. Continue reading...

Vučić’s 12-year reign looks to have been ended by record turnout of voters in election provoked by student-led protests The long-serving leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has conceded defeat, ushering in a seismic political shift after a historic election that saw the increasingly authoritarian leader pitted against a student-led movement that had spent two years protesting against his government. Vučić pointed to preliminary results that suggested voters had overwhelmingly backed the students, potentially giving them a majority in the country’s 250-seat parliament. Continue reading...

Trump again congratulated Ohio senator’s rear end before his cheeky comment about rapper being ‘hard to miss’ Donald Trump reiterated his apparent love for buxom bums during a rally in Michigan on Sunday where he encouraged the crowd to compliment rapper Nicki Minaj ’s behind. Trump’s cheeky comments about Minaj’s derriere came as he explained his recent observation on the Republican Ohio senator Jon Husted’s rear end. Earlier in October, Trump said of the former college football player: “I don’t do this with men very often. I started examining his body, because I didn’t know he was a great athlete. And I looked and I watched up and down. I looked at his ass and I looked at the whole – and then I looked at his hands. Look at his hands. He’s got these, like, claws. Continue reading...

Championship leader wins from Leclerc and Verstappen 20-year-old should win title in next race in Mexico With a calm assurance that belies his tender years, Kimi Antonelli delivered another masterclass at the US Grand Prix, ensuring that while he could not quite seal the Formula One world championship in the Texas sunshine, it is a coronation that is surely only delayed for a week. The 20-year-old has made it almost a formality that he will seal the deal at the next round in Mexico. Antonelli’s dominant victory in Austin at the Circuit of the Americas, with a controlled and composed drive to beat the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc into second place and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen into third, was described by the Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff as “one small step” towards the title in what has been a season of giant leaps for the Italian. Thirteen years later, José Mourinho led Real Madrid into the Camp Nou as one team and them out again as another having secured the kind of late victory he loves and which opens up a whole new world. With just three minutes and the final reserves of energy remaining, a wonderful moment of skill from Jude Bellingham found Eduardo Camavinga and set them on one last run. Camavinga sprinted free, skilfully slipped Pau Cubarsí and pulled back for Kylian Mbappé to provide the finish, a little bit of history written. “The world that loves football will have stopped to watch this and they won’t have gone disappointed; this was two teams that played to win,” Mourinho said. It had been an intense, breathless ride, a proper battle, and it was his team who won it. Arriving right on time, Mbappé scored his second to make it 2-1, the Camp Nou falling quiet and their team given no time to react. They had drawn level after Mbappé’s opener, Raphinha scoring, but could not do it again. Continue reading...

Television & radioThe Hollywood star is so grumpy in this new travelogue it’s like he wishes he wasn’t there. Think sulky car journeys, strained encounters and the sense of a TV series imploding A Course Called Ireland is a new documentary in which Bill Murray golfs his way around the “Emerald Isle” while reflecting on everything from his great-grandmother to worms. The heart leaps. Bill Murray? The same Bill Murray whose genius for wounded obnoxiousness was so beautifully deployed in Groundhog Day and Lost in Translation? Yes, the same Bill Murray. A montage of coming attractions does little to dampen the ardour. Here is the 76-year-old actor teeing off amid the gasp-inducing greenery of County Kerry. Here he is squinting at the “hardworking Irish worms” that stripe the fairways of coastal Cork. And here he is saying “hah-hah” in a variety of other golf-adjacent locations while surrounded by locals whose body language suggests that they, too, are in the process of saying, or at least thinking, “hah-hah”. We ready our jaws for the cavalcade of bittersweet guffaws that will inevitably follow. Continue reading...

Nefarious doings, tiny-headed henchmen and sockless villains – the mob saga is back. And it’s as lovable as it is bloody Just when we thought we were out, they pull us back in. Seventeen months after it huffed off in its Toyota Omertà, This City is Ours is back for a second series of high-stakes gangland bastardry. Which means, all things being equal, or at least Liverpudlian, we can expect more of the following: convoluted drug deals conducted over congealing ragu; shouting; tiny-skulled henchmen with chests of astonishing bulbosity, as if someone had squeezed their legs like tubes of toothpaste and all the meat had been forced up to their armpits; beards. So yes, it’s back. Go tell it on the mountain. And bring a shovel while you’re at it. A shovel? Yes, a shovel. Now stop asking questions and start digging; this corpse won’t disappear by itself. “’Ee’s gone,” whimpers Cheryl (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), blinking weepily in the Marbella sunshine as troubled mobster Michael (James Nelson-Joyce) manoeuvres the decomposing remains of her late husband into a makeshift grave. And ‘ee has. Gone that is. Poor Davy (Stephen Walters). Shot by erratic kingpin Ronnie Phelan (Sean Bean) for leaking information about a drug deal, his life snuffed out like a heavily discounted Yankee Candle. Davy is now, alas, gravy. Brazilian Supreme Court ordered voting in runoff to be extended by two hours Sunday as Flávio Bolsonaro narrowly leads incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva The local electoral court ordered the immediate restoration of 100% of the bus fleet and ordered the arrest of the municipal transport secretary, Pablo Souza, on suspicion of an electoral offence and disobeying court orders. The arrest warrant could not be carried out, however, because he is in Paris on what the city government described as an “official mission”, and is not expected to return to Brazil until Monday. Late in the afternoon, Flávio Bolsonaro also filed requests for voting to be extended by two hours in cities in the states of São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina, but because of heavy rain that he said had prevented voters from turning out. Making innocent protesters liable for damage would be bad for rule of law and play into far-right hands, say opponents Emmanuel Macron has been accused by trade unions of trying to curb the fundamental French right to protest as the government fast-tracks a bill to make protesters pay for damage caused by vandalism at street demonstrations even if they did not directly cause it themselves. The French president, who leaves office next spring, has faced more than a month of protests in which high-school students have blockaded schools demanding a response to teacher absences, repairs to decrepit buildings and changes to the university applications platform.
